Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Being a consumer, is it possible to order directly from tubus?

Answer: Sorry, this is not possible.
Tubus as a manufacturer supplies and sells products to specialist bicycle shops.
Your local dealer offers on-the-spot support and is your professional contact person.
Please click here to find a dealer close to you or the importer for your country.

Question: Does every tubus carrier fit on any kind of bike?

Answer: Our rear carriers can be mounted on any bike which has no rear suspension. If your bike has a rear suspension, ask your dealer whether a tubus carrier is usable.
If your frame has no eyelets to mount a rear carrier, you will need our
Art. 71500 to mount the carrier with the quick release skewer. For the upper mounting you will need our Art. 71614-71624, which is a clamp set for the seat-stays of your frame. You will find this and many more additional products here.

Our Lowriders TARA and ERGO suit to all forks, which have an eyelet on every lower end of the fork-blade. If your fork has no eyelets in the mid-section of the fork-blade, you will need our LM-1 set (Art. 72100) for standard forksize or LM-BF (Art.72200) for bigforks. You will find these products here.

Our DUO Lowrider suits only to forks, which have eyelets at the lower end of the fork and also at the mid-section of the fork-blades. The eyelets on the mid-section of the fork-blades have to be on the inside and the outside of both blades.

Our SWING suspension carrier doesn't fit on any suspension fork. If your fork has the brake-booster on the rear side of the fork-crown, the SWING will not suit. The range of available forks is so wide, that we are not able to give any advise to which forks the SWING will suit.

Fitting conditions are: The suspension fork may not be wider then 165 mm, otherwise the stays of the Swing cannot pass the fork. The distance between the two stand-pipes has to be 74 mm or wider.
The hight of the crown may not be higher than 30 mm at the fixing point of the Swing. The width of the crown is limited to 45 mm.
By the way: The standard length of the pull rod is 220 mm. It is also available in 190 or 270 mm length.

Don´t order this product from a mailorder shop before you know that the SWING will perfectly fit on your fork.

Question: To mount my carrier properly onto the frame , I have to bend the 8mm dia. aluminium rods which came with the carrier. Is that allowed? If yes, how do I bend them the easiest way?

Answer: The stays can be bended up to an angel of 45°. It is important, that the position of the bending is at least 20mm far from the flattened end of the stays.
The easiest way to bend the stays is in a vice. Please wrap the stays either with a piece of leather or a thick cloth to prevent them from bending marks.
TIP: If you have a carrier with 2 rods, bend both rods parallel in one go.

Question: My bike has disc-brakes. Is it possible to use a carrier from Tubus?

Answer: In the most cases, depending of the geometry of your bike, our feet-extension will do. This extension will move the carrier more back-and upwards. Or you use our DISCO-carrier, which is made esp. for bikes with disc-brakes.

Question: Is it allowed, to drill a hole into the carrier, to lay a light-cable inside of the carrier?

Answer: If the hole is placed at the right location, such a hole will not harm the fatigue of the carrier.
Cause of legal reasons, we have to disclaim any kind of liability for damages caused by the drilled hole.

Question: Are the carrier from Tubus usable for bike-frames made out of carbon-fibre?

Answer: Yes, as long as the frame has the eyelets/ bosses for mounting a carrier /mudguards.
If the frame has not such eyelets/ bosses, you are not allowed to use our "clampsets for seatstay-mounting" ! The reason is, that such a clamp could cause a lateral contraction of the carbon-fibre, which would destroy the frame.
Please contact you local dealer to check whether your frame is usable for clamp-mounting or not.

Question: I have problems to mount the spring-clamp onto my carrier (esp. CARGO + LOCC). What can I do?

Answer: The spring-clamp should be mounted by your local bike-dealer, cause it is a bit tricky to mount it onto the carrier. The tension of the spring is very high during mounting, you need the right tools and experience to mount it properly.

Question: Does a sping-clamp exist for the titanium carriers AIRY and CARRY?

Answer: No, for this carriers we do not offer a spring-clamp.

Question: I`ve lost the plastic-inserts which close the ends of my carrier-tubes. Are this parts available as spare-parts?

Answer: Yes, every single part of our products is available as a spare-part. No minimum-order-amount, no packing-unit!
Please contact your local dealer, he can order each single part you need.

Question: How can I avoid the surface-abrasion caused by the plastic parts of my panniers?

Answer: Our carriers are coated with a very strong polyester-based coating. But the hooks of modern panniers are made out of plastic with a content of glasfiber. These hooks are abrasive and grind the surface of the carrier. When there is additional sand or dirt betweeen the hook and the carrier, this goes even quicker.
The same happens on aluminium carriers by the way, only the colour of the visible corrosion of an aluminium is black, instead of red (which we call rust) on steel based carries.

Each of our 25CrMo4-Steel-carriers comes with a set of adhesive foil (Anti-scratch set) Art. 79000, which must be glued before using bags onto the area of the carrier-tubes where the pannier-hooks touch the carrier. The surface of the carrier must be very clean and free of any oil or dirt, before bonding.

If your carrier has already scratched areas, you can repair it with a common paint stick.
Such a repair is not neccessary for the fatigue of the carrier, it is only for a nicer visual impression.

Question: Carriers made out of steel - don't they rust?

Answer: Every metal material corrodes. Some alloy more, some less. Tubus carriers are made out of steel, because the fatigue is much higher than the fatigue of aluminium. Our stainless steel carriers are extremely resitant against corrosion. Our other carriers are made out of 25CrM4 steel, which doesn`t belong to the family of stainless steels. This steel is mainly used for aircrafts, steel bicycle frames and many products in the automotive industry. It is a very strong material, but it can rust without a protection such as a surface coating or painting. Our non stainless carriers are all coated with a high quality coating. This will not chip off after it has a little damage. If your panniers rub on the surface of the carrier (esp. with very dirty panniers), the coating of the carrier can abrade where the pannier touch the carrier. However, the rust will not penetrate deeply into the material of the carrier. If you would like to restore these spots for aesthetic reasons, use a standard paint in the colour of the carrier (black or silver).

Our Advise: Always affix our Art. 79000 Anti-scratch set before using bags; it is a protection foil which protects the surface of the carrier . (The surface must be clean, dry and oil-free before adhesive bonding)

Question: My frame has oval-shaped seat-stays. How do I find out which "clampset for seatstay-mounting" will fit?

Answer: Fix a strap of adhesive tape around the oval-shaped seatstay, on height where the clamp should be placed. The ends of the tape should overlap each other. Now take a waterproof pen or a ballpen and make a line crosswise the tape, to mark where the tape overlaps itself. Detach the tape from the stay now, and tape it onto a piece of paper. Now measure the length of the tape between the marked lines. (which equates the circumference of the oval tube)
Divide this dimension by 3,14. The result should equate one of the diameters of our "clampsets for seatstay-mounting".
For example: You measure 75,5 mm distance between the lines on your tape. 75,5 / 3,14 = 24,04 mm. In this case, the
right clampset would be Art.-No. 71624, which is suitable for 24-25mm (round) seatstays. Cause of the flexibility of the clamps, they are able to snuggle tightly around the oval tube.

Question: What do I have to do to fix an ORTLIEB-pannier with a QL-1 mounting system onto a Tara or DUO?

Answer: You have to change the lower hook, which is originally not wide enough to encompass the 14mm tube of the carriers Tara and DUO.

You need our Art. No.: 30013 to change your pannier over to fit perfectly onto our carriers.

Question: Do Ortlieb-panniers with QL-1 fixation-system fit on a LOCC rear carrier?

Answer: Yes! On a 28"-LOCC without any restriction. On a 26"-LOCC, the pannier can be fixed on the upper rail of the carrier.

Question: Which bicycle-lock can be fixed on the LOCC carrier?

Answer: Every U-lock from ABUS, which has a the Shackle-clamp from ABUS. On abus.de you can check which shackle clamps are available, if your lock did not come with a clamp.

Question: I would like to tow a bike trailor with my bike. Will there be a conflict between my panniers on the carrier and the carrier?

Answer: This depends on the size and position of your panniers and the model of trailor you use. Please ask you local dealer to check the question of compatibility.
He is able to check all components of the different manufacturers you use.

Question: Is it allowed to fix a child-seat on a tubus carrier?

Answer: No! Please, don't. Our carriers are made of thin-wall steel tubes, which are not suitable to clamp a child seat onto them. We assume no liability for any kind of harm or damage, caused by noncompliance to this rule.
